Halo-Haloween pt. 9: Boholst on multi-genre horror, Kalie on production design, Sigaw, Michael Copon’s Killer Holiday

From Oct. 17 to Oct. 31 FilAm Creative will be celebrating all things Filipino and horror. Halo-Haloween is hosted and programmed by FilAm director Walter Boholst and his new horror film “Voodoo Possession.” Contributions by Natasia Gascon and Mark Owen.

Writer/director Walter Boholst talks about how Voodoo Possession isn’t a traditional horror movie just about scares but a multi-genre movie that’s more about troubled characters and a dark story.

Production designer Kalie Acheson talks about the director and production challenges.

SIGAW (The Echo)
Sigaw is a 2004 Filipino horror film directed by Yam Laranas. The film was a box office success in the Philippines where the horror genre has become increasingly popular.

Laranas also directed the 2008 english language remake called “The Echo” starring Jesse Bradford. If you’re curious what an American remake of a Philippine movie looks like you can compare the trailers.

Horror-movies.ca interview Yam.
Q. Moviemaven and myself recently viewed your film “The Echo” (Sigaw) and I must say I was impressed. What would you say was your main inspiration for the dark, moody feel of the film?

When I saw Ringu, I thought to myself “…I wanna make something scarier sans the make-up and special effects. Not necessarily better, but, at least different. So, let’s just say Ringu indirectly inspired us.

But, the major inspiration was an ACTUAL MURDER that happened in one of the elevators of our apartment building. I was one of the first to see the blood scattered inside the elevator – and trails of it leading to the main lobby. That was eerily inspiring.

A lot of people find some similarities between The Echo and Ju-On The Grudge or Dark Water. But, it’s so tough to let some people believe that I never saw these movies up until the release of The Echo.
